Telephone and Data Systems Locates Around 10 Miles of Lead-Covered Cables

By Denny Jacob

Telephone and Data Systems on Monday said its subsidiary conducted an assessment of its network across the country and located around 10 miles of lead-covered cables.

The telecommunications company said it’s working on next steps to address the amount of lead cabling it estimates is in its network. It added that it strives to follow all applicable local, state and federal laws where it provides service.

The disclosure comes following an investigation by The Wall Street Journal that revealed U.S. phone companies have left behind a network of cables covered in toxic lead.

Shares of telecommunications companies have taken a beating since the Journal published its investigation. Telephone and Data Systems’ shares closed Monday down 8.4% to $7 in the regular trading session. Shares of AT&T, Frontier Communications, Lumen Technologies, and Verizon Communications fell as well.
