Forget the Tie. The $20,000 Watches Dads Are Getting This Father’s Day.

For Father’s Day, sometimes the proverbial tie just won’t do. This holiday, lucky dads are in for a special surprise when they unwrap an exceptional timepiece selected by their family members to express appreciation for all they do as father figures.

We surveyed a selection of retailers on the East Coast of the U.S. to find out which Father’s Day watches are destined to become heirlooms.

Govberg Jewelers, Philadelphia

“Around Father’s Day, we see a renewed focus on timeless designs and watches that can be worn for all occasions,” says Caroline Kallman Joffe, director of marketing at Govberg Jewelers in Philadelphia. She notes interest in Tudor’s Black Bay collection and Cartier’s Santos for dads this year.

However, one local software engineer is getting something decidedly out of the mainstream, H. Moser’s Streamliner Centre Seconds Matrix Green (US$21,900), dubbed the “Green Dragon” for its intense green fumé dial.

Shreve Crump & Low, Boston

Having achieved the means to splurge, a 30-something, Boston-area son wanted to give his father something special this year to say thank you for helping him become the man he is today, says Brian Walker, executive vice president at Shreve Crump & Low. He chose Vacheron Constantin’s Overseas Self-Winding (US$25,000) in stainless steel with a black dial.

The elegant 41mm sport watch is powered by the brand’s Caliber 5100 movement with a 60-hour power reserve. It also comes with a steel bracelet, plus two alternate straps in black calfskin and rubber that can be easily changed using Vacheron’s tool-free system.

Hublot Bal Harbour Boutique, Miami

At Hublot’s Bal Harbour boutique in Miami, a son purchased a Big Bang Original Steel 44mm (US$12,900) for his dad, who just retired from a lifelong career in finance.

The son took note when his dad was looking for a casual weekend watch and expressed interest in Hublot, so he selected the sporty chronograph in stainless steel fitted with a textured rubber strap. Inside beats Hublot’s HUB4100 self-winding chronograph movement with a 42-hour power reserve.

Cellini, New York

Rosanna Doherty, director retail sales at Cellini in New York, tells Penta that a hedge-fund investor can look forward to wearing his new Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Micro-rotor (US$24,000) this Father’s Day. The 40mm stainless steel watch makes a refined, contemporary statement with a matte gray dial that is guilloché engraved in a barleycorn pattern and appointed with sleek, Delta-shaped hands. The finely finished ultra-thin caliber PF703 automatic movement with a platinum micro-rotor is on full display through the sapphire crystal case back.

Betteridge, Greenwich, Conn.

A hard-to-get Santos de Cartier Skeleton (US$31,500) will make a big reveal to a Connecticut dad whose family went to Betteridge in Greenwich for something surprising and rare. Cartier designed the bridges of the skeletonized, manual-winding caliber 9611 MC to double as the brand’s signature Roman numerals and tinted them with emerald-green lacquer.

The 39.8mm stainless steel case is fitted with a seven-sided crown set with a complementary faceted green jasper stone, and the stainless-steel bracelet can be easily swapped for a matching green alligator leather strap.

Wempe, New York

At Wempe in New York City, a Virginia woman purchased a Nomos Glashütte Tangente Neomatik 41 Update from the Wempe Signature Collection (US$4,100). According to Ruediger “Rudy” Albers, president of Wempe USA, she was looking for something extra special and unique for her watch-enthusiast husband this holiday.

The limited edition of 200 pieces with a special ice blue dial is exclusive to Wempe, and the case back is engraved “Tangente Limited Edition Wempe Signature Collection – One of 200.” The in-house caliber DUW 6101, features Nomos’ patented peripheral date display in dark blue encircling the dial.
